Singing

Sing a Story

Ages 4–95 minutes

What You'll Need

  • Just your voices

How to Do It

  1. 1

Tell your child: "Instead of talking, let's try singing everything we say!"

  2. 2

Start by singing a simple question: "What would you like for lunch today?" (make up any melody).

  3. 3

Encourage your child to sing their answer back to you.

  4. 4

Keep the singing conversation going for a minute or two.

  5. 5

Try narrating what you're doing in song: "Now I'm walking to the kitchen..."

  6. 6

It's okay to laugh! This is meant to be fun and a little silly.

Why This Helps

Singing conversations help children discover that melody is all around us — we don't need a "real song" to sing. This builds vocal confidence and creativity while showing that music-making can happen anytime, anywhere, with no preparation needed.

Try This Next

Try singing your way through a whole routine — getting dressed, making a snack, or tidying up. Can you make up a little song for each step?
