Instrument Spotter

Ages 5–105 minutes

What You'll Need

  • A phone or speaker to play music

How to Do It

  1. 1

Choose a song that uses a few different instruments — something with a clear mix.

  2. 2

Listen to the first 30 seconds together. Ask: "What instruments can you hear?"

  3. 3

Listen again. This time, try to focus on just one instrument. Can you follow it through the music?

  4. 4

Name the instruments you hear together. It's okay to guess! "Something with strings," "something you blow into," "drums" — all count.

  5. 5

Listen one more time. Can you hear anything new that you missed before?

  6. 6

Talk about which instrument is your favorite in this song and why.

Why This Helps

Identifying instruments trains the ear to separate individual sounds from a mix — a skill musicians call "analytical listening." It helps children understand that music is made of layers, and each layer contributes something special to the whole.

Try This Next

Listen to the same song and try to count how many different instruments you can hear. Then try a different song. Does it have more or fewer instruments?
