Sound Safari
What You'll Need
- Just your ears!
How to Do It
- 1
Sit together somewhere comfortable — inside or outside.
- 2
Close your eyes together (or just sit very still).
- 3
Set a timer for one minute. During that minute, listen carefully to every sound you can hear.
- 4
When the timer goes off, take turns sharing what you heard.
- 5
Try to remember as many sounds as possible. The refrigerator humming? A bird? A car outside?
- 6
Do it again in a different spot. How are the sounds different?
Why This Helps
Active listening is the foundation of all music learning. Before children can make music, they need to notice sound. This simple exercise sharpens their ears and builds the habit of listening with intention — a skill that helps in music, school, and relationships.
